Screening Tool

Amsler Grid Test

A simple screening tool for macular degeneration and other conditions affecting central vision. Mark any areas where the grid appears wavy, blurry, or missing.

โš•๏ธ Screening tool only. This test cannot diagnose macular degeneration. If you notice any distortions, missing areas, or changes compared to previous tests, schedule an appointment with Dr. Khilar promptly.

Assessment Summary

What the Amsler Grid Detects

The grid helps identify changes in your central vision that may indicate retinal conditions.

ใ€ฐ๏ธ Wavy Lines

Straight lines appearing wavy or curved (metamorphopsia) can indicate fluid or swelling in the macula โ€” a hallmark of wet age-related macular degeneration.

Urgency: New waviness is considered urgent โ€” see a doctor within days, not weeks.

โฌ› Missing Areas

Dark, blank, or blurry patches (scotomas) suggest damage to the photoreceptors in the macula. May indicate advanced dry AMD or other macular conditions.

Note: Small blind spots can enlarge gradually โ€” regular testing helps track changes.

๐Ÿ”ฒ Distorted Squares

If the grid squares appear different sizes or shapes, this may suggest early macular changes, epiretinal membrane, or macular edema from diabetes.

๐Ÿ“… Regular Self-Testing

Ophthalmologists recommend testing with the Amsler Grid weekly at home, especially if you're over 50 or have risk factors for AMD.

Tip: Test at the same distance and lighting each time to reliably detect changes.
